Breast Reconstruction in Cambridge & Peterborough (Cambridgeshire & Lincolnshire)

Breast Reconstruction in Cambridge, Peterborough & Lincolnshire: Professor Malata has been in Private and NHS practice in Peterborough since 1999 following superspecialty training in cosmetic surgery and breast surgery in the USA. He is the most senior breast reconstruction surgeon in the Cambridge Breast Unit at Addenbrookes University Hospital, Cambridge and is a member of the extended Peterborough Hospitals Multidisciplinary Breast Unit, thus allowing patients in Peterborough to benefit from his renowned expertise in post-mastectomy breast reconstruction (Malata Cambridge Breast Unit Profile). He offers all his patients immediate breast reconstruction, giving them the opportunity to awaken from surgery with a newly reconstructed breast.

Professor Malata, an experienced and highly skilled cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgeon, can provide breast reconstruction at the same time as the mastectomy procedure (immediate breast reconstruction) or at a later stage (delayed breast reconstruction) depending on your personal preferences.

He performs all types of reconstructive breast surgery including breast implant procedures, latissimus dorsi (back/ LD) flap techniques with or without breast implants, abdominal free flaps (DIEP, SIEA, TRAM) and other flaps (gluteal/ buttock perforator SGAP & IGAP, outer & inner thigh flaps).

Professor Malata has pioneered the LeJour (vertical scar) pattern mastectomy and immediate reconstruction technique to optimise cosmetic breast reconstruction outcomes in patients with large breasts or droopy breasts (Cosmetic Breast Reconstruction with the LeJour Skin Reduction Pattern). Additionally he has special expertise in the reconstruction of both slim subjects and the heavier patient.

As a result of his American super-specialisation in cosmetic and breast surgery, Professor Malata excels in undertaking aesthetic balancing procedures on the opposite breast in order to achieve the highest degree of cosmetic breast reconstruction. These symmetry procedures accompanying post-mastectomy breast reconstruction include breast augmentation with implants, breast reduction, breast lifts or a combination breast lift and enlargement (augmentation mastopexy). Sometimes a capsulectomy and breast implant exchange is necessary in patients who have previously had cosmetic breast augmentation. He is highly experienced in performing balancing cosmetic breast surgery on the opposite breast at the same time as the immediate or delayed breast reconstruction  This is called simultaneous balancing surgery of the opposite breast during breast reconstruction.

Another area of Professor Malata’s expertise is bilateral breast reconstruction that he carries out using breast implants or expanders in suitable patients or employing the patient’s own tissues such as the lower abdomen. Bilateral breast reconstruction can be performed for a number of indications including preventive mastectomies for example in patients with a mutation of the breast cancer genes (BRCA1 and BRCA2) or very strong family histories of breast cancer.  It can also be undertaken in patient who have previously had a mastectomy but now wish to have a prophylactic mastectomy on the opposite side. He works closely with the breast surgeons, oncologists and geneticists who will determine the appropriateness of and your suitability for the prophylactic mastectomy and hence reconstruction of both breasts.

Professor Malata prefers to reconstruct the nipple-areola 3 – 6 months after the breast mound reconstruction.  He also undertakes correction of inverted nipples and correction of unequal or asymmetrical breasts be they caused by a developmental abnormality or the result of previous surgery or injury. Professor Malata has written extensively on various aspects of breast plastic surgery and lectures nationally and internationally on cosmetic surgery and breast surgery (Malata Breast Surgery Publications).
